SUB URBAN HOUSE started with two friends, a shared obsession with music, and a belief that the best music conversations shouldn't stay between us.
Created in Birmingham, Alabama, by Isaac “Sub” Nunn and Olu "Oluwa Flow" Aladebumoye. SUB URBAN HOUSE began as a space to explore the music we love: House, Afrobeats, R&B, Hip-Hop, and everything that lives between the genres.
But music has never existed in a vacuum. It lives alongside poetry, photography, storytelling, movement, fashion, and the communities that give it meaning.
ROOTED IN BIRMINGHAM. CONNECTED THROUGH MUSIC
Birmingham is home.
It’s a city with history, creativity, and a music and arts scene that continues to grow, yet too often some of its best moments go undocumented.
We want to help change that.
From the BJCC and Avondale Brewing Company to Iron City, Saturn, intimate rooms, local stages, festivals, and places we have yet to discover, SUB URBAN HOUSE is documenting the artists, crowds, venues, DJs, photographers, and creatives shaping Birmingham’s music culture.
Sometimes that means being in the photo pit capturing the lights, movement, sweat, and split-second moments that make live music unforgettable. Sometimes it means stepping behind the decks ourselves, discovering records, mixing genres, and creating a space where people can experience music together. Other times, it’s sitting down to tell the stories behind an artist, an album, a song, a scene, or a moment worth remembering.
Our coverage starts in our own backyard, but it doesn’t end here.
As SUB URBAN HOUSE grows, so does the map.
WHERE WE'RE GOING.
We’re still building, and that’s part of the story.
The vision for SUB URBAN HOUSE is bigger than a website or social media page. We see a platform that can move between the stage, photo pit, DJ booth, festival grounds, studio, and community without losing what made us start in the first place: genuinely loving music and wanting to share it with other people.
That means more live music coverage, original photography, artist discovery, DJ sets, festivals, conversations, and collaborations. It means finding the people doing incredible work and giving their stories a home.
And eventually, it means creating our own experiences: events, showcases, open decks, festivals, collaborations, and spaces where music isn’t simply consumed but experienced together. We want SUB URBAN HOUSE to grow into a collective where DJs, photographers, writers, artists, music lovers, and other creatives can find one another, collaborate, and contribute to the culture we’re documenting.
Because we don’t just want to stand on the outside and tell you what happened.
We want to document culture. Participate in it. And, when the opportunity comes, help create what happens next.
HOW IT STARTED.
Before SUB URBAN HOUSE had a name, it was just Sub and Olu talking about music.
For more than two decades, music has been woven through our friendship.
We come from the era of portable CD players, handwritten tracklists, wandering around the mall, listening to albums in music stores, burning CDs, downloading songs to iPods, and yes, we're showing our age.
The technology changed. The habit didn't.
Today, we're still sending each other tracks, talking for hours about artists and concerts, building festival bucket lists, debating music, discovering new sounds, and chasing the feeling of hearing something incredible for the first time.
Somewhere along the way, we realized those conversations could become something more.
SUB URBAN HOUSE became the place to put them.
What started between two friends is now becoming a space for the people who love music, create around it, document it, and keep its culture moving.
For the DJs setting the vibe.
For the photographers catching the moment.
For the writers telling the story.
For the artists making the sound.
For the producers shaping it.
For the crowds bringing the energy.
For the music lovers who keep listening.
That feeling is where we started.
It’s still what drives us.
And now, we’re opening the door wider.
